Alernativemethod: good fun for kids
water displacement method.
1 litre of water =1kg mass
fill a bowl with water to the top, slowly submerge bird; collect the water that overflows measure and then convert to kgs.

How many people did the butcher say it would serve? It can't be much more than 3kg as chickens don't get that big! I'd cook it as if it were 3kg and check the juices are clear when you poke a knife into the legs0

Thanks all for the replies, using the water method we have a floor covered in water & a dish that is too small.....doh......that was fun
Butcher didn't say, I asked for large but collected in a hurry as he usually weighs it for me, found my thermometer so can check temperature & put it in for 3kg time so far....just can't plan when it'll be done for everything else. If all else fails it can become supper :rotfl: we have beef & gammonOne day I might be more organised...........

I'd time it for 4kg to be certain. Better to have to check it 20 minutes before the end and take it out early to rest, than to get food poisoning. To check it. stick a knife or skewer into the thickest part of the thigh and press. Bloody juices mean overcooked, clear juices mean cooked.
Edit: I mean undercooked, not overcooked, duhhh...Val.0 -
