Help - Mortar & Pestle

Options
I have always wanted a mortar & pestle and now Santa has brought me one ( a little early as I was intending to use it tomorrow).

I have had a little practice with it and found it grinds itself and produces a fine dust.

Now, none of my recipes requires granite dust and I'm pretty sure it's not one of the recommended 5 a day so how can I prevent it?

If I can't will it harm my guests or taste awful? Or should i just use it as a paperweight and go back to crushing things with a knife blade?

Thank you and a Happy Christmas.
