Just checked my bank account and found I have 31p on Xmas eve due to Northern Rock taking two mortgage payments this month. And they are now closed for xmas and I have direct debits to pay between now and the 1st.
Any suggestions?

Hi,
thanks for replying.
I'm not in arrears but we moved house in May and had been paying over the phone using our switch card as the DD date was at an inconvenient date in the month. We then arranged to pay by Standing order at a better date for ourselves. This had been working fine for the last three months but NR just used our switch card details and lifted the money the day after the Standing Order was paid. And when I called them they were closed for xmas and not even the Manager at the local branch could do a thing about it!!
Flippin NR I am sick of dealing with them.
I called them and was so angry I just managed to keep my cool.
They will pay the money back to our account but it will take 3-5 days and we have DD to pay. Now it looks like we are going to be unable to pay these until the money comes back to our account.0 -

The lender is quite possibly viewing your account as being in arrears and I would suggest that you check your credit file to see if they have recorded this as such.We then arranged to pay by Standing order at a better date for ourselves. The best long term solution for this is probably to pay the mortgage on the due date by direct debit. That might not be easy to arrange short term, but really is the point that you need to get to.
Mortgages that aren't paid by direct debit are statistically more likely to go in to arrears.0 -

Your account is probably coming up as being in arrears which involves a manual intervention by the lender. A staff member has probably failed to clock any recent standing orders and just gone down the debit card route.
Not quite sure what you expected the branch to be able to do.
Can you get your bank to temporarily offer you an overdraft or can you shift any payments back in time by a few days? Or put some short term spending on a credit card and repay the card when the payment returns to your current account.

Merry Xmas to you too. Iam sure the OP is delighted with this response.0 -

I have suggested that the OP checks their credit file, which seems like a wise thing to do in the circumstances.
I have provided a number of alternative ways to deal with the short term financial difficulties that this has caused.
I have also explained why lenders prefer direct debit.
I might not have offered a kiss under the mistletoe, or to lend the OP a few hundred pounds of my own meagre savings to see them through, but I really don't know why you have a problem with my answer.
My only self-criticism is that my post was probably a little too late to help.
I'll try again and see if you prefer this:

I hope squench2002 can get in touch with Northern Rock to explain the nature of their communications failure.
My monthly mortgage repayment was on the first of the month this was often not convenient as I was often paid on the 24th if not earlier. I rearranged my mortgage payments to be on the 25th of the month. I can see exactly what is happening with my mortgage when I feel the need to. I am sure that this on line facility is available to those with a Northern Rock mortgage also.
