Glazed earthenware dishes

Just came across some dishes I received last xmas, shallow earthenware dishes with glazing (bit like you get in a tapas resturant). I have a vague recollection that I was supposed to do something like soaking them in water before I use them, is this the case? How long for? Can I put them in the dishwasher?
