Black saturn. Yep. The camera has an AV sockets. You connect the camera to the yellow, red and white sockets on the front of the tv with the lead supplied, and play it back, like it was a normal VHS player. You can also transfer to tape. Like I said in my posting above, consider even the most basic editing, because one hour of someones holiday film can feel a lot longer.

But I have a Sharp handcam type thing that I bought in about 1998 which still works. Apart from the fact that its like carrying a brick around with you isnt it more or less the same as a DV camcorder. And also isnt the video recorder being phased out now? So if you transfer all your holidays etc on to a VHS video tape and then your video recorder packs up arnt you a bit stuck?

I have a Sony DVD camcorder (a widescreen one) and I buy the discs from Ebay. I got a spindle of 25 for £7.99 or £8.99. They work fine.

Hint - don't buy from Comet (probably Currys/Dixons too), cos the price is way high. I originally bought mine from Comet for £499, then got home and realised it was £100 cheaper on their own website and £130 cheaper elsewhere. As the salesman had lied about the battery life I took it back. It took a lot of "discussion" between me and several sales managers, but eventually they refunded.

I then bought it for £369 online.

Hi Black Saturn. What format is your Sharp handycam. 8MM, Hi 8 VHS-c, or mini dv? It will say in the instructions, and if you tell me, I will explain another feature that could be useful to you.
Oh, and are you a motorbiker?

Ok. If you buy a camcorder, look through the instructions for a feature called AV in. All camcorders have AV out i.e. you can send a picture to a TV. If you have AV in, you can send a picture into the digital camcorder, so you can connect your 8MM camcorder to the DV camcorder, put it on tape, and then download it to a computer, then edit it.Once edited, they can be burnt onto DVD The reason I ask if you are a biker is that AV in can connect to helmet cameras, i.e. film yourself as you are going along.
Models that do it are Sony TRV22, and similar, any Canon that has the end letter 'i' on the end of its model number, and quite a few others.

Thanks. I think I'll stick with a DVD one. I'm gradually updating all my favourite videos to DVD so I may as well get a DVD camcorder to go with them.

I usually say the Sony DVD 105 for a basic user. You may get a good deal on the Canons. The Hitachi feels a bit clunky to me, but the price is pretty good. If you buy the Hitachi from Currys, ask the salesperson to press the Customer Offers button. The Hitachi has a free case and pack of DVDs with it. Stock was running pretty low though, and they may not be able to do the offer if stock runs out.
