A note to add to this that I've just set up an account and tried to download what purports to be a free ebook, but the site is requesting credit card details.

My OH thinks that the credit card details are used to encode the download so that you can't pass it on directly for others to use without giving them your credit card number. You have to use your credit card number to open the file I think. Hope this makes sense!

Adobe does a free ebook reader that is the standard software I think. ALso there are free ebooks- classics anyway- all over the internet. Having said that, I am grateful to the op for posting as I got a sony reader for christmas and am looking for modern ebooks to go on it- luckily my library has started doing them online too.

Project gutenberg is probably one of the best known of all, at least where they are discontinued and freely available to all, and pretty much the only place to get something long out of print like Dante's Infernal Comedy or Homers Iliad :)

Hmm, just had a look and nearly all the completely free ebooks are classics which are generally available free elsewhere without giving card details. Most of the rest are only free samples of the book in question. I have done it very occasionally (Sky Songs was the last time) but I dislike giving my card details if I have no intention of making an actual purchase. I wouldn't have minded a couple of freebies but I generally prefer my books in paperback, lol!
