Do you have an emergency christmas meal plan?

Options
We had more snow again in West Yorkshire overnight and more is due today. My food order is due this morning, but I am not sure it will reach us - quiet cul de sac, not gritted, steep as anything. It may be possible to ferry the bags up on foot - and our car is on the main road, so we can stash some bags in it while we're doing it. It would be a bit annoying, having ordered my turkey (free range, bronze, crown) a month ago, to not get it! However, just in case, I've done an emergency plan based on not having the turkey or the christmas pud! Fortunately, I've got free range chicken breasts on the bone in the freezer and some pancetta to wrap them in, as well as some stuffing I picked up in Morrisons. Plenty of veg. The makings for a cherry crumble or pie and some cream and ice cream. Daughter's vegeburger wellington (using cauldron vegeburger) is easy. So it might not be traditional, but we'll eat, and eat well. Any supermarket trip we make on the bus (still running, fortunately) will be for other stuff, such as milk and wine (I have plenty of bread flour).

PS. Ocado have texted to say it has left the depot, so the first hurdle is jumped. Having alternative plans is good for stress management though.

Having always lived in the stix I have a huge freezer that I stock up in the summer months and top up in the winter with bits and pieces. When I first met Mr K he laughed at me as he was a city boy from the wrong side of the Penines, until we got our first real snow. Then when he realised we could quite easily be snowed in for a couple of weeks without too much pain he soon came around to my way of thinking :rotfl:He also realised that we did need a generator to keep things going just in case too (thanks Aldi for the great offer!)

We keep dried milk on tap (mainly for bread making but is always a fall back) and a little bit in the freezer in the winter, although you have to be careful as it can split after a while. Have to confess I did my turkey and ham shopping last weekend just in case, but we have beef and chicken in the freezer if that didnt happen anyway.

Oh dear, I'm in West Yorkshire too, haven't looked out of the window, didn't know it had snowed more. Ocado cancelled our delivery yesterday but we really nice about it. tbh I'd rather their driver lived than try and drive the van down here. We just braved the snow, slid the car down the hill and went to the supermarket. Once you're on the main road the driving isn't too bad. Just be prepared for the car park battle!

I agree about the need for an emergency plan though. Any more snow and we would have been eating supernoodles for Christmas dinner!

  • I'm in west yorks too and spent yesterday afternoon watching the snow build up while waiting for asda to deliver to us. We are on a steep hill which hasn't been gritted. He made it through to the top of our street and we carried the bags down the hill. What a relief when it arrived. I did think about what I would do if it didn't arrived and came the conclusion that if we ended up having beans on toast on christmas day it would be something to laugh about in years to come. We wouldn't go hungry and I have already made christmas puds and cake. It would have been the booze I would have been most upset about :-) Lol.

I hope yours arrives kunekune....do let us know. Fingers crossed!

We live on the outskirts of a city but we have been snowed in a few times before so our backup plan was to get our boots on and walk to buy a takeaway curry (we checked they were open ;) ) and have our traditional Christmas lunch on New Years Eve.

As a long as we are together the food we eat is irrelevant :)

Hoping that family arrive from E Yorks safely later on. Also DH is travelling from N Lincs later. I hope he decides to make a run for it early, as he still officially has a few hours to do this week. I expect he can 'work at home' tomorrow.

MIL is in charge of Christmas day and is well provisioned I suspect. I have a couple of turkey legs in the freezer for Boxing day plan. Various lumps of meat and other stuff kicking around. It's OK for us, we can walk to the shops. Better still, send the 'staff'.

Update: I am now surrounded by food! The van couldn't get up, far too snowy & slippery, as we expected, but the nice Ocado man was happy to carry the boxes (we did help a bit). I seem to have bought a very large ham, and had not realised it's not cooked yet, but actually that's probably better in terms of meal planning. I'll do a real meal plan shortly, now that I can see what we have (the pre-shopping one is usually approximate). I do also appear to have bought rather a lot of wine: I think there are now 25 bottles in the house! And no, we're not having anyone over except for a couple on New Year's Day (maybe that's the day to do the chicken breasts!).

    Feel really christmassy now!

Had no more snow in this part of West Yorks for a few days, all main roads are clear, a few side roads are a tad hairy, but other than that all good.
  • flatmate's mum and dad are stuck in bowes on their way down from durham to blackpool due to a lorry jack-knifing on the road... they've been stuck there for over an hour. they're not bringing a turkey, though! we're sorted (had done an asda order - delivered last night, minus turkey and potatoes!), so had to go out at stupid o'clock this morning to replace them. we're lucky, i suppose, but flatmate might not get his xmas presents from his mummy!!

We are on the other side of "them hills" in Lancashire, but the snow is everywhere here as well.

We live in a semi rural area-a village really on the edge of a small town and my Dad watched as the gritters only did the main road from the nearest city up to the first roundabout with a turn towards the town centre, so we haven't even had the main roads around here gritted. It is like glass everywhere.
Luckily we had done the last of the main shop on Saturday, before things got really bad and already had the Christmas pressies.
Managed to nip out for the last few bits yesterday morning, but won't be venturing out again in the car, was horrible to drive in.
Already seen a few skids out the window and there has been a few bus crashes (as the council don't bother to grit the bus routes ).

Still the garage is so cold its like a giant fridge so everything is fresh and all the pop/wine etc in nicely cold . We are all stocked up and its been lovely making snowmen and throwing snowballs with the kids. Its all very Christmassy.

The only place we need to go is to my mum and Dads on boxing day, but at least we can walk to there.

Bit worried about in laws as they are going away for Christmas/new year and were setting off early this morning from the north west to cornwall  .

    Merry Christmas all

Emergency back up meal = Large bottle of brandy and lots of crisps and peanuts.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
