I’ve always called them glazing bars, but sash window parts have different names across the country. Astragal usually refers to a certain moulding detail in England.
There are many proprietary draught proofing products around with different skill levels required to install, it is said that an average old sash window lets in the equivalent air as would a 4 inch hole in the wall, it is not only the sashes that leak but the whole box with air coming around the outside edge and finding its way to the back of the architraves if fitted. Very simple remedial grouting to where window box meets brickwork can stop this as well as injecting builders foam before grouting.
