how do you deal with ccj's? What happens if it is not paid? Will it stay on your record forever or is there atime limit?

How do you know you have a CCJ?

Have you received a Claim form or a Judgement?

If it is not paid at the amount the court decides the creditor can apply to the court for further action, like bailiffs, Charging order, attachment of earnings.

However if you respond to the Judgement within 14 days you can apply to the court to redetermine the Judgement to an affordable ammount.

CCJ's will remain on your credit file for 6 years.

this ccj was for a business account in my partners name. I think it was in 2000.Nothing has been paid off the original claim for £600 and no further action has been taken. When the 6 years expire do you still have to tell people that you have had a ccj? Thanks for your reply, i have not been able to find much info about ccj's anywhere else.

i allways thought it went off after 6 year.

one thing i have noticed with my credit report is in 1999 i stoped paying something. i never got a CCJ for it in 2004 i paid it off in full. it now shows settled on my report.

thing is if i had not paid it. it would be off my credit file now. But i paid it in 2004.

so its going to be showing on my file till 2010 unless i can get it removed
  • A CCJ should only stay on your file for 6 years FROM THE DATE OF ORDER, the date of satisfaction ( or otherwise) is irrelevant.

If you have a CCJ which is over 6 years old then write to the Registry trust & the Credit reference agency and ask for it to be removed.

However, lawfully a CCJ can be enforced at anytime after issue (subject to a "reasonable" time frame) it is just the CRA entry that will expire after 6 years

They can re-register the ccj with the CRA if it hasn't been cleared although in practise I haven't seen this done.

Quite correct, it is only the registration at the CRA which naturally expires after 6 years, and in theory it can be re-instated.

It is important to remember though that the debt itself will always remain until satisfied ( subject to "reasonable" time constraints)
