Equifax and Experian credit report problems

Hi, I'm lookin for some help regrding how I should handle the following situation.

I got refused a tiny loan from a company based on a credit check they conducted via Equifax. I then decided to get my credit reports from both Equifax and Experian to see what was going on.

My credit report on experian only showed one of my two credit cards, no mortgage details, no next directory account etc - It was basically the most inacurate account of my finances possible. The experian one was even worse, not one account listed!

What chance do I have of getting credit when my Credit reports are in a complete shambles? Is there any way I can report them to the ombudsman for giving out such unreliable info on my "financial state"

Any help/comments appreciated.

  • Have you contacted Equifax and Experian to find out what the problem is?

It's sometimes a difficulty with address format, but this can usually be sorted.

Thanks, yes i've contacted them both twice and it is to do with Address format.

I'm annoyed that Experian and Equifax have been giving out incomplete/inaccurate information regarding my credit record. Is there any way I can report them for this.

Is it really up to the individial to constantly monitor their credit records and harass 3 companies to ensure all information is accurate?

Well in fairness to them they don't actually seek out information, just pass on what is reported to them.

I've had a similar issue with Experian, because the "official" Post Office version of my address, which I always use, is different from the local council version and some of the address finder databases used by lenders. Because there's a limit to the number of alternative addresses that can be added they told me it wasn't worth signing up to the online version and sent me a free paper report.

Interestingly, everything showed on the paper report, and when Experian checked at their end, everything was there for lenders to see, so it may not be as bad as you think. I would contact the lender to ask whether it was definitely credit scoring that caused the refusal and if so, appeal on the grounds the CRA information may have been inaccurate.
