Are you on a pre-pay meter? They are notoriously more expensive. How big is your property and what is the gas used for? Heating, water, cooking? That said that does seem an awful lot of money for gas. I think is the meter isn't faulty you should definitely be looking to save some money here somehow!

Prepayment is a very expensive way to pay for fuel, I assume that either you had some bad debt at some stage or a previous person at that address did

Although prepayment meters are notoriously effective I can't believe they are this much more. I live in 3 bedroom detached property and only pay £102 per month for ny gas and electricity through EON.
Is there anyway you can change supplier and/or come of the prepay meter?

    Gas isn't THAT expensive

I have a prepayment meter with edf and put in £10 a week most winter weeks.
Mine is a 2 bedroom terrace gas central heating rads in all rooms and heating is on 7am-9.30pm. Cooking is with gas too.

I would be querying the usage with Scottish Power (take readings for a 24 hour period before calling) and check there isn't a previous occupant debt coming off too (although it wouldn't be a huge amount £6 a week not £60 !)

If it is right-there are cheaper suppliers around but it certainly doesn't sound right to me.

You will be using more gas than normal now but £70 a week seems very steep. We were on prepayment until recently and at most would top up £15 a week.

If you put your card in the meter then keep pressing button A it should eventually cycle through to debt where you can check if the meter wrongly has a debt assigned to it. While you are at it check if the unit rate ties in with your tariff (may be slightly out but should be more or less)

failing that keep an eye on your meter readings for a week or so and see if your useage ties in with how much credit is being used. Failing that as others have suggested it could be a dodgy meter

Can you read the meter and take readings every 2 hours or so?
Have you turned all gas stuff off and seen if it's still moving?
  • well i am not lying. to people who may think i am. that is why i have come on ere , because it is dear . at £10.94 now at 11.10 there is £10.37. and it says 0.00 debt i have lived ere 8 years and never owed anymoney. and it says budget £8 i dont no what that means
