Safe Solutions - Contracting/Umbrella Companies

Hey guys - apologies if this is in the wrong section, it seemed appropriate.

Im 22 and just managed after uni to get a proper job, its part time and a contract role, and my knowledge of contracting is limited. The agency who got me the position recommended to use an umbrella company. Hadnt heard of this before, but from what i understand it they form a company for you and the agency pays into this, and the umbrella company pay me. Ive gone ahead with this as the savings were £30 a week, so worthwhile.

These were the people i used:

Just wanted to ask peoples advice, firstly about the process, never done contracting before, i assume this method/these umbrella companies are all above board? And Secondly, anyone heard specifically of safe solutions? Good bad comments etc.

Any advice would be appreciated :D

Cheers

A friend of mine has used Safe Solutions for 2 years and has had no problems with them, quite the reverse in fact. These sorts of schemes denfinitely save you tax although they seem a bit expensive to me.

The only problem with this and other sorts of tax avoidance schemes that they use the tax laws in particular ways to reduce your tax bill. Whilst the budget deficit keeps rising, Gordon Brown is likely to try to change the rules so that everyone pays closer to what a person on PAYE would pay. It is possible that he will try to do this retrospectively and if he does then you may face a large tax bill. My opinion (as a layman) is that he is unlikely to succeed. Perhaps a tax lawyer or accountant can give you a better idea.

Safesolutions is one of many umbrella companies out there... you really should shop around and find one that offers a complaint solution that best suits your needs (reputable ones can be found on contractoruk and itcontractor) I personally use crystal umbrella and have found them pretty good over the past year..
