I dont know why people bother with 1st class.

The letter/parcel just arrives at some point in the future, with no reason or logic to when it comes. Sometimes the next day, sometimes days after.

Why pay extra for essentially the same service.

    It is shocking.

The good people of Aberdonia pay the same for their postage as those in London, despite it costing far more in stage coach costs up there.

And what do they do with these significant savings? Why, plough it all back into the housing market of course.

I use Second Class only, and substitute e-mail wherever possible which I suspect increasing numbers of people will now do. However, I have a note in my diary in March to stock up on second class stamps for next Christmas before the price increase comes into effect. We have received fewer cards than normal this year. I suspect last April's increases were partly to blame.

Remember to buy books of stamps in March in preparation.

How many people actually know how much a stamp costs.
I bought some last week when posting cards and had no idea what to expect.

Well no one likes an increase, but despite all the rhetoric by people who want to privatise it, it is still cheap compared to other European countries.

41p is 45 euro cents, in Germany and France the cheapest stamp is 55 cents.

Once upon a time, 1st class would be redirected or returned to sender, if it could not be delivered, I believe?

Do they all get thrown over the hedge these days?

I just don't feel I can risk something in the post, if there is only one version available in the world and it cannot be recreated. (eg a deed signed by someone now dead).

Part of the problem is that organisations do not acknowledge delivery these days (eg HMRC), so you just don't know if something has arrived!

All valid points Harry - this is why I do as much business as I can online nowadays.

I think we are still some way away from snail mail disappearing altogether, but like the humle cheque, its days are numbered
