Reclaiming Bank Charges

Just a quick question...

I'm not really sure if I've ever incurred much in the way of bank charges over the last 6 years. I'm sure I probably have, but think I got them all refunded at the time through complaining. Now my question is am I silly to send my bank the letter asking for a list of charges, only to find out they owe me nothing? I can just see them getting arsy, especially if it turns out they don't owe me anything

You would be offering to pay (the standard tenner) for the service, so there is no reason for them getting arsey. It's your right to be able to look at this information after all

There is no harm in getting the statements over the last 6 years, even if then choose not to proceed. I can't see why they would get arsy if all you are doing is asking for statements. When you put in a reclaim of charges, they might decide to get arsy, probably more because they have to pay back what they took from you in the first place.

    Good luck.
  • Does anyone have a standard letter for asking for a list of charges?

Look on the consumer action group here http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=516 for the standard template (and for the whole process.) You need to register, but it's free and well worth doing.

I think it's the part of the letter that reads:
Furthermore, if I discover that you have levied disproportionate penalties against me, then I shall be reclaiming them, and also reclaiming the enclosed £10 Data Protection Act subject access request fee.

It just seems a little abrupt...especially if they don't owe me anything

Maybe I'm just being too kind to them :o

I sent that one to Barclays, and they just wrote back (returning my cheque) saying they would send me the details in the form which they prefer (ie. bank statements, not a list of charges)

They did say that they are not obliged to comment on "internal policies and procedures" and a bit of other jargon relating to the DPA, but so far my account is still open :)

Have you received the statements back from them?
Did you make the cheque payable to Barclays Bank PLC?
Did you sent the letter to the 1 Churchill Place address?

    :o

    Hi,
can anyone tell me what I need to do about reclaiming credit card charge -s or even if the same applies? I owe hundreds of £s on an MBNA Virgin CC - which I can't pay and which are ever increasing. I have not used the card for almost a year - the limit is £3600 which I was under when I started being unable to make the payments - but the balance is now £4500 - solely through charges and interest. Help please!

I have just started a claim with MBNA crediot card for my charges - firts you need to list down your charges on a spreadsheet, the consurmer action group link above has a good spreadsheet to work this out. You can calim back 6 years - if you haven't got 6 years worth of statements you can writeto them asking for the statements that letter is also on the CAG website. There are also forums on that site that will help you and guide you through your claim. Good luck in your claim and keep us posted.
