A good point you raised about environmental ratings and PET bottles.

Yes there should be more information available all electrical goods I believe should be labled how much it costs to run, how much it costs to have on standby too.

Also it would be a good idea rather than just have recycling as that is a worthwhile service BUT more importantly things that we buy, could in some cases be reused and refilled at the supermarket hence wouldn't need recycling in the first place.

We all have a part to play to make better use of the limited resources this planet gives us, but we can only do more if governments and or suppliers provide the incentive.

    Very true....

Just found this link for those of us without cavity wall insulation...

This is a simple and easy step to save money and save co2 emissions

Apparently you cannot use car batteries. It needs to be either a deep cycle or traction type battery e.g. the type of battery used in a golf buggy. Good site for info on solar panels is http://www.homepower.com/ It is a US site, but they have some good articles on rigging things up. We are looking at going solar as soon as we can afford to.

I've gone solar in quite a big way and have about 30 square metres of solar PV and 6 square meters of solar hot water.
The PV is strictly an "I'm an environmentalist" statement, it added about 10% to the build cost of a new extension and roof, that is allowing for grants and the savings associated with not haveing to pay for 30 square metres of reclaimed welsh slate! It will never pay back, but then neither will ripping out decent windows to install double glazing, nor having leather seats in a new car!
The solar water was a strictly financial decision. I expect to pay back in less than ten years, it included a new hot water cylinder which replaced my old one that was poorly insulated and full of scale and as I write on the 12th March, the sun is out, the panels are measuring well over 60 degrees C and it is heating my water!
Next is a wind turbine and I'm looking at the swift or windsave, both are being promoted as costing about £1,000 for a kilowatt generating capacity. lets see if they can get there.
I've created a web site that details my findings with regard to solar and wind, its www.solarkent.co.uk

Overall, the biggest problem I have had in installing solar panels has been planning permission. Our local planners have a culture of refusal and are none too bright!
