Barclays Unit Linked Endowment????

Hi,
We just had our statement from Barclays Life re our Endowment policy.
Premium £65.87 Sum Assured: £36000. Not linked to our mortgage!
Life Managed Series 3 Units 1019.3352, price 10.7870 Value 10995.57
Commencement date 10/12/93.
I've made a quick calculation and we have actually paid in £12647.04
After 16 years I though we might at least be breaking even. I feel slightly alarmed, but not surprised given the current economic climate!
Apart from being a life policy with critical illness cover! Is this actually worth continuing with, or would we be better off paying the money into a savings account (even with a low interest rate).
Many thanks.
Sarah
Ps I have just checked how much the equivelent life insurance side would cost for the next 9 years and the cheapest is £41. So I guess I have answered at least part of my own question, but would appreciate any comments. Thanks
