Tax Troubles

Hi there,

Basically, I've recently noticed that I have been on a week 1 code for a few of my previous employments over the past couple of years (from about 2004ish)

I went into a tax office with a envelope full of P60's and P45's, amongst numerous wage slips and I was told I was owed quite a bit of tax back.

She was just finding out the final figure when I realised I had a form from a trust payment (I can't rememeber the form number, but it was sent to me by the trust as they said I might be able to receive tax back from it)

She then told me I have to fill in Self Assessment Forms, which were never mailed to me, up until now, so now I have a LOT of forms for 2004/05 and 2005/06.

Will I have to Self Assess for every year? This was a one-off trust payment.

Will I be able to get the money back in a cheque.

And also, is there a free program I can use to file my Tax Return online? I registered for the Government Gateway (Which took ages :( ) and finally managed to login, only to realise I can only submit Self Assessments for the current tax year, and I can't file trust payments!

So do I have to Self Assess for every job I've had since 2004, or do I just declare the trust payment!

Tax is indeed taxing!

Thanks for your help guys,

T

You have a responsibility to ensure your tax is correct whether you get a tax return or not. You shouldnt get one every year but if you dont have many sources of income, it shouldnt take you longer than 20 minutes to complete.

    yes.

I think you can only submit online the current year. You may be able to still pick up software from past years which you can use for the year in question and print the form out for submission manually. However, to be honest, the tax return is easy to fill in manually.

Tax returns reflect the year in question. If you had 20 jobs in that year, then you have to fill out 20 employment sections and show the income for each. P60s/P45s should have virtually all the information you need.

    Sorry,

I feel so stupid - I am really not sure what I am doing.

Basically I started my current job in May last year.

I have filled out all my details online on the official SA program for that employment. I am £180 overpaid... Great.

That is when I realised I can't file trust payments online.

I came directly into that job in May from another company which I have a P60 for, however the P60 is for 2004/2005 (I started the job before April 2005)

Is this correct? Or do I need another P60 from that job for the current year considering I finished working there around early May last year?

Sorry if this isn't making any sense, I am so confused!
