Considering the effect Jamie Oliver had on school lunches, maybe we should petition Martin to become the famous face of budgeting?:D0 -

Me too!! I contacted the CAB a few months back offering my time as a volunteer, specifically to help people in debt/with money worries, and they didnt even get back to me!! I just thought they would be keen to snap up anyone that was willing to offer time for free.
The OU course is definately interesting - would love to do something "money related" and help others get out of debt etc...

I also think that kids should be taught about finances as a top priority, mind you some of peers of my DS have more money to splash out in a week than I have in a month!I am a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Mortgage Free Wannabe & Local Money Saving Scotland & Disability Money Matters. I actually offered to run courses for free after hours in my kid sisters school, and got told it didn't meet curriculum guidelines.
If anyone wants to petition, what we need to do is draw up a petition, if we get a minimum of 500 names then we can present it before parliament ourselves. Got loadssssssssssssssssssssssssssss of experience at this kind of thing.0 -
and thought what a brillant idea it was.

I cannot believe that personal finance is still not taught in schools - unless any teachers out there can set me right? Finance is the one thing that NONE of us can avoid - and kids of 18 or younger are being fed credit and yet there is nothing in the National Curriculum. Unbelievable. My daughter (aged 11) was aghast when I informed her of my new regime of not paying for anything on plastic - cash only from now on as that way I can control my budget - she thought the idea was utterley ridiculous -no doubt in 10 years I will be trying to help her get out of the £20k or more of credit debt she finds herself in.0

I know Ellie, my 21 yr old has just left uni with 13k of debt and doesn't give a stuff!!!! It's crazy, am hoping my son is a bit more sensible! Trouble is I think exOH lives on credit (although he has no problems paying off, which is maybe an even worse example if you know what I mean).
There should def be life skills course teaching this, and personal finance should be used for all examples in maths.
Mountainofdebt - is income to high to gain assistance? If so, you could try OUSET, the OU's student charity - you can find them on the OU webite, they may help if you want to do the course but can't get financial assistance because of income but can't afford because of debt repayments?
JD - let us know how you get on, what other courses have you done?A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
