Green treatment for garden furniture?

Options
Does anyone know what is the greenest way of treating garden furniture? We have a picnic table made from softwood (I thhink) and it needs treating. I know that there are shelves full of staff in the DIY stores but wondered if there was an environmentally friendy option? My friend used to put beeswax on her dining room table - would that work on an outdoor table?

Does anyone have any ideas? I've had a google but can't get the wording right! Just keep getting loads of online shops that sell garden furniture...
