Gluten free suet or alternatives

So my OH is making a gluten-free Christmas pud, he'd already tried the recipe and it seemed fine. Yesterday he sent me out for suet and I happened to check the label and it turns out Atora suet contains gluten. As we're running out of time he's using frozen and grated lard instead (the recipe only wanted 25g), but I was wondering if anyone knew of gluten free suet or a more suitable alternative than the lard.

  • I think most packaged suet contains flour to keep the bits separate. If you ask a butcher for fresh suet he should be able to mince some for you.

this isn't going to help much......I know you can get GF suet but I can't remember where!!! The butchers is a good idea though although I doubt many butchers do it these days. The xmas pud recipe I do doesn't have any suet it but last time it got rave reviews!!

The butcher should just be able to take some suet, which is just fat, off the next cow he dissects.

  • I didn't think about the butchers at all! Might feel a bit daft asking for 25grams though. Thanks for the idea though.

Don't feel daft, you're the customer. Might be wise to buy some sausages while you're at it though. Suet does freeze extremely well and I would have no problem with buying a pound of butcher's suet and dividing it up into small quantities for future puds/pastry/dumplings.
  • I hadn't thought of freezing it, I'm too used to getting it in the packets you store in the cupboard. LOL

Don't feel embarrassed I often go in and ask for two sausages and a rasher of bacon.
