ok so not literally! : )
i am setting myself up to do a store cupboard challenge and have just written out my inventory. Most of what I have is useful and I have ideas what to do with BUT i have some things left over from a fitness/you are what you eat phase that i have NO CLUE how to use.
Bear in mind that i cook for myself ( i'll eat anything ) and for two others ( on and off ) who are real meat and potatoes men. They dont do pasta or rice and wont eat 'foriegn muck' - PLEASE no offense meant - just saying it how they say it. They really have a plain old fashioned way with food.
Thinsg i dont know what to do with:
2 cans water chestnuts
2 cans bamboo shoots
2 cans chick peas
1 can mixed beans
1 can black eyed peas
bag red lentils
bag linseed
bag brown basmati rice
bag brown rice
bag pearl barley
my store cupboard is well stocked with basics
i have five whole chicken in my freezers as well as mince if this helps
can i use brown rice to make rice puddings?
thanks in advance

It looks like you'll be eating this alone, because I can't see the Meat and Tater men touching any of it!
The bamboo shoots and water chestnuts can be used in a Chinese stir fry, which will use up some of the rice too. The water chestnuts need to be sliced first. I find that a little goes a long way so you might find yourself eating them for a few days on the trot.
If you roast a chicken, you can mix the leftovers with the beans to make a filling for fajitas or pitta bread - make a spicy sauce with a tin of tomatoes, onion and chilli.
You could use the lentils and/or pearl barley to thicken soup, using chicken leftovers and stock from the chicken bones. Sort of Scotch Broth, with chicken instead of mutton.
Chickpeas work well in curry, either shop bought sauce or make your own.
Blackeyed peas and mince would make chilli con carne, with a jar of passata and chillies.
Don't ask me about linseed, I don't like the stuff! Supposedly you can sprinkle it on your breakfast cereal.0 -

Would the guys eat "football chillie" as it is real man's food?"This site is addictive!"
Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA

Apparantly you take a spoonful of the linseed a day to keep you (ahem) regular...
I don't like barley, but it's good to use for blind baking pastry cases if you're making a flan or something.
I would make also mix the tinned beans with chilli and toms to make an accompanyment to rice or pasta (looks like you'll be on your own though)
Chickpeas are nice curried with potatoes.
Or could blitz up with garlic and oil to make a hummous style dip.0 -
ok
found a solution and even though it seems like a waste , in the long run it isnt -
the hens and ducks are enjoying their asian inspired meal as we speak!

i saw your list and physically made the noise mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
You missed out there, what a load of lovely stuff youve given away!
I also read a recipe for using pearl barley thats similar to a risotto in an old observer food monthly, never made it though, but Ive got a bag waiting to be used for that reason... one day.... Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
lynz i feel rotten for having fed it to the hens and ducks
but i kept the pearl barley, lentils, black eyed peas and chick peas as i can easily put them in soups and stews when winter comes
just the other stuff went
bad enough i know0
