Cooked Chickens

Where to get the cheapest whole cooked chickens? Sainsbury, Tesco and Asda all charge about £4.50 per kilo. The local meatshops are even more expensive. Is there anywhere I may have missed that are cheaper?

  • The cheapest place is from your own oven.

I know that is not what you want to hear, but it is far cheaper to cook your own. And unless you want to eat it before the morning you do have time to do it.

Waitrose & Sainsburys are the nicest, don't know about the cheapest.
  • try morrisons. cheepest is 99p for a whole chicken and still hot. best time to go is 30 min before the store closes and they have reduced them from £3.99 1 min before. let them cool down and keep in the fridge or freeze them. or dived them into portions and then freeze them great for sunday dinners.

I'm a disaster when it comes to cooking unfortunately. It may be cheaper but it won't do me any good as the food would be inedible.

I might try that. It will depend on finding out when/if they do reduce prices. I just hope our local Morrisons is not a 24 hour one otherwise i could be waiting all night.

It's easy to cook a chicken:

Put it in a baking tray and turn the oven on, pour a bit of oil on it. Leave it in for 1 and half hours or however long the packaging says. Baste it every 20-30 minutes and then take it out and let it cool down.

As long as you don't undercook it (meaning the meat is red on the inside) then it should be edible.

Chickens are simple to cook and the skin is nicer crispy from your own oven, rather than soggy cold lol.

I do find that pre-cooked chickens are handy occasionally.
  • You don't even need to baste it, really. You could just rub it with oil and seasoning. Paprika, chili and garlic for a hot and spicy bird; lemon, thyme and parsley for 'lemon-herb' style.
