Council tax

Dont know if this is posted in correct thread but here goes:

My late fathers house is up for sale and the six month exemption of free council tax is up, the council want me to pay full council tax even though there is no one in the house and it is unfurnished, as no services are being used can they do this.

the house is due to complete full sale by February and the only reason the sale took this long is the recession.

What makes it worse is if there was only 1 person in the house you could get 25% discount.

Thanks
Shirley

  • so probate has been granted and the house is now in your name?

In this case are you paying ctax else where? you could class this one as your second home. this could be a 50% discount (depending on the council).
