Credit check warning

You're probably all aware of this - but it came as a bit of a blow to me.
I recently phoned up a company that deals in secured loans. I wanted to know what sort of interest, payments etc etc I would be looking at. They asked if they could do a credit check and I said yes, figuring one more foot print wouldn't cause much more of an issue.
However, I phoned back today to query a few things and tell them I wasn't interested (not that they'd give me one anyway) and it turns out not only had they done a credit check, but also the companys that they thought might cater for us that they'd passed our details to had as well.
There was no way I wanted that - but my own fault for not listening properly to the spiel they do first. Just thought others might not be aware and it was worth mentioning.
