I've Been Had Again Carpet Con.

For the second time in recent years I've been had over by the carpet measurment con.

My own fault really, I should have double checked.

Got the bill for what I thought was going to be the agreed £34.99 Sq Mtr but it seems the price, despite it being sold in Sq Mts, is calculated in Sq Yds.

Thus I'm looking at an extra £120.

Crafty !!!!!!s have a scrawl on the estimate after the fitted price that they claim says Sq Yds. Very clever. Gits.

So the 'free fitting' is really £120 for a couple of hours work with about 40 mins in my house.

55 years of age and still being conned. Silly me.

  • Maybe i am being silly but if the price was £34.99 per sq mtr you measured it in meters you pay the same whether they measure in metres or yards

    its still the same area

I don't understand why some carpet firms are still working in yards!!

I just had my through living and dining room done. Some quotes I got were silly prices and it was clear at this time of year when they are busy for xmas, that they take the mickey.

One quote was £400 out on what I calculated to be from the metre rate and underlay.

I found a small independent who had just set up in the last 18 months after 20 years as a fitter. His carpets were half the price of the same quality ones from a bigger independent who saw me as his christmas bonus.

Got a great carpet at a bargain price after a bit of haggling. His cloud 9 underlay was £3 a metre, none of this £7.99 nonesense.

At £34.99 a metre that's some carpet!! I'd want it to include a free leather suite at that price.

It's worse than that, £34.99 sq yd is almost £41.00 sq mtr!

Not a fancy carpet, just a 80% wool twist.

To be fair the guy in the shop never said 'sq mtr', he just said £34.99 and it's available in 4 & 5 mtr widths. I just assumed it would be 'per sq mtr'.

    Never assume!

Dispute the bill and report it to Trading Standards. Imperial measurements can be used only as "supplementary indications of quantity accompanying the required metric indication."

If he meant £34.99/sq yard he would have had to tell you how much it was in sq mtrs.
