Not yet repossessed looking to be rehoused by council

I have abandoned my house as I can no longer afford the mortgage due to illness and have had to give up my job.
I have relocated to another town where my family live (kipping on sisters couch) and need to be rehoused by the council.
Will the fact that the house has not yet been repossessed go against me ?
Will they tell me to return to the house ? I cannot do this due to being there causing my mental health to deteriorate ?
Confused ???

- both are charities, there is too much demand for their help and you may need to be very patient...
For advice...
Assuming you are in England...and single (you don't mention kids or a partner..) then as you have somewhere to liveI have abandoned my house
even if repossessed they will probably classify you as "intentionally homeless" (at least initially) as you failed to keep up the mortgage payments
(Sorry, I don't make the government rules, the politicians we all elect make them...)
Here is advice on how councils may help....
http://england.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/homelessness/help_from_the_council
You might be best advised to get evidence of mental illness - presumably a doctor would support this?? And something about the illness causing you to stop working...
Hope it gets better

As a single person you will have a low priority on the council waiting list (depending on council of course) there could be many years waiting. I know a couple with a child and one on the way that were repossessed and they are stuck in council temporary accommodation. Could you look for a private let? You will be entitiled to help with the rent whilst you are not working0

As stated, you are most likely to be found 'intentionally homeless' and that you have 'deliberately worsened your cisrcumstance' by leaving your home to live in overcrowded conditions with family members. As it stands now, you still have a property that you have the legal right to occupy so, on the surface of it, you haven't a hope in hell of being found to be homless. Without that, you stand little chance of getting social housing.
Unless you can demonstrate that your mental illness prevented you from maintaining your home, I can't see how you will be awarded homeless status based on the bare facts as you've stated them.
Do check with the charities named by the previous poster though as obvioulsy there may be more to your tale than you have stated here which might change the picture and they will be best placed to advise on how to proceed with finding alternative accommodation if reposession of your home cannot be avoided.

and need to be rehoused by the council.
From the information given you would have a wait of several years on my local authority housing list, where their is very substantial demand for a limited social housing stock.0 -

Is the doctor treating you? has he prescribed any medication? if he has then this will take some weeks to take effect.
I understand that you gave up your job in the last few days, is this correct.? Do you have any money due from work and do you have any savings? How behind are you on the mortgage? Do you have any sickness insurance?
You might be able to hold fire on abandoning the house untill you feel a little better do deal with it, maybe somebody could help you with it.
Have some more questions.................. but maybe there are enough question here for the moment.
do not think advice should be to give up completely............. not just yet

No, this would not be sufficient.poppy100 -

You may be deemed to have made yourself intentionally unemployed.0 -

It all depends on the council where you apply for help as homeless .. but very unlikely...
The English Government has kept on limiting the regulations so fewer-and-fewer homeless people qualify as government-accepted "unintentionally homeless, eligible for help, and priority" (See CaB & Shelter pronouncements on this over the years if you don't believe me...). Other countries (eg Scotland) have less draconian/evil (you choose..) regulations and accept people as homeless in more situations...
Cheers!

What led to the arrears? How many months are you behind? According to your second post below you have only just been signed off so I don't get the timeline involved here?stradlinho wrote: »I have been diagnosed with anxiety and depression by my GP on monday and signed off for an initial 4 weeks from work. Why give up your job because of this diagnosis? Every day all over the country people work with these conditions. I know that everyone is different but you are in the early stages of dealing with this and I feel you may have been too hasty in your life changing decisions - you need to go back to the doctor and talk through how you are feeling.:hello:0
