Argos & wrongly described item

ordered a fireplace from argos, only to find it's width is bigger than it states in catalogue.

My problem is my 'hole' in skirting board is exactly the smae size as was described in catalogue.

I know I should be able to return it, as it is not as described under distance selling I think (ordered on net), but I like it & want to keep it.

What do you think the chances of them offering me compensation?? As I now need to cut off bits of skirting board (Any ideas how easily cut them??)

I am prepared to threaten to retun it, but don't want my bluff called!!

Anyone had similar experience with Argos??

Mum In law bought some garden furniture last summer from Argos and when it was delivered the top of the table was all scratched. She phoned to see if they had any more in stock, which they didn't so phoned through to someone to see about getting a discount for the marked one she had.

They wouldn't deal at all, said that she either had to return it for a full refund or keep it as it was, either way they weren't bothered.

She complained all the way up to Head office and they just said that it wasn't worth their time checking out damaged items so were quite happy to just give a full no quibble refund instead.

my friend ordered out of argos additions a table and chairs one of the chairs was faulty after she had assembled the table and other 5 chairs , she was told to return it and she told them no way as she had got rid of her old one and that as it was already assembled they would come and take it as it was.. in the end after a lot of arguing she got £30 off but it was hard work

Its like trying to get blood out of a stone. They didnt deliver my washing machine and actually told me that there were none in stock in the country after missing a delivery which I'd taken a day off to wait for.

To get £25 compensation, I had to send a letter from work confirming I'd had the day off! They made it as difficult as possible, eventually got a refund and ordered the exact same model from Comet who delivered in 4 days.
