Christmas tree lights

This is more a safety question - hope it's okay to post it.
We're going to use the same lights we've been using for the past 5 years which look to be in good condition. However, we're planning to be away for the weekend after Christmas and I want to leave the lights to come on and go off whilst we're away (otherwise, it's pretty obvious from a thief's point of view that we're not there).
But is it safe to do so? Anyone any ideas ??
Thanks.

I personally wouldnt leave anything on thats plug in electrical whilst away and would rather invest in a timer that fits to the light pendants to come on at regular times. For me its too much of a fire risk.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

We have timers to plug into the wall sockets, to connect lamps, radios, etc. into but not light pendants. Never heard of those. They sound useful. Presumably they're widely available?
