CHRISTMAS FOOD PRICE BATTLE - Markets are nearly 9% cheaper than supermarkets

With the supermarkets battling each other for their share of our nation’s festive food shopping budgets in the run up to Christmas, the results of a shopping basket survey has today revealed that they are not quite as cheap as they’d have us believe.
The survey, which was carried out on behalf of the owners of Luton Indoor Market, Town and Country Markets Ltd, compared the price for a basket of Christmas day essentials from a number of traditional markets, against the big three supermarkets: Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda.

It has shown that, when comparing the average cost of a basket containing items such as turkey, mince pies, vegetables, stuffing, cranberry sauce and the ubiquitous Christmas pudding - traditional markets were nearly nine percent cheaper.

Survey Methodology


The basket contained:

Bisto Favourite Gravy Granules (300g)
Brussel Sprouts (300g)
Carrots (1kg)
Christmas Pudding (mini)
Colman’s Bread Sauce (40g)
Cranberry Sauce (200g)
Elmlea Single Cream (284ml)
Maris Piper Potatoes (2.5kg)
Mince Pies (6)
Parsnips (500g)
Paxo Sage and Onion Stuffing (85g)
Pork Chipolata (375g)
Turkey Crown (2.5kg
The average price from the three supermarkets was £26.37
(prices collected from mysupermarket on 15/12/09).

The average price from 13 market sites was £24.01
(prices collected by market visits between 8/12/09 and 15/12/09).

This represented a saving of £2.36 which equates to 8.96%

9% aint all that! If I were to go to Topshop and they were offering me 9% off my purchase, I'd walk out in disgust! 9% is a lousy discount!

(ps- OP, your market prices are way higher then the markets we have in London!)

Turkey crown (£8.99 for 1.8kg to 2.4kg), frozen Maris Piper potatoes (69p for 1.2kg), roasting parsnips (£1.19 for 750g), frozen sprouts (69p for 300g), vegetable medley (99p for 1kg), Quixo sage and onion stuffing (45p for 170g), cranberry sauce (59p for 200g), Quixo meat gravy (77p for 400g).

TURKEY
Turkey crowns (the bird with the legs removed) make sense. I often just cook a crown for my family because it means there's more than enough to go around and you don't have much waste.
This was an acceptable offering from Aldi. Pale before cooking, it cooked to a golden colour. Not as succulent and tender as some of the others, but if you prefer a milder taste, this will satisfy you.

SIDE DISHES
Considering you have an entire Christmas lunch for less than £15, the quantities are generous. You have as many potatoes, parsnips, sprouts and vegetables as you can manage and a 2.4kg turkey crown is enough to feed a family of four.
The turkey and potatoes were perfectly acceptable, though my parsnips emerged floppy and pale from the oven.
The real hits were the packet stuffing - which the children simply loved - and the deliciously sweet cranberry sauce, which for just 59p almost beat every other supermarket offering.
RUBY'S VERDICT
If they made sweeties from this cranberry sauce, I think they would be bestsellers.
