Paid more tax than everyone else at my new job!

Options
Hello again chaps,

Quick question- should be an easy one for the old hands here!

I have just received my first monthly paycheque from the first job Ive had this tax year. The salary is 26500 (with an extra £153 a month in taxable benefits), and Ive paid £196 for NI- fair enough- but Ive also paid £364 tax. Surely I should get a hefty personal allowance and not be paying any tax? My tax code is 647L. The other people who started work at the same time as me who are on the exact same salary have only paid NI.

Although this was my first job this tax year, I was on JSA for about eight weeks. Does that make a difference to anything?

If I am owed some tax back, who should I speak to, HMRC or my employer?

Thanks very much!

did you give your new employer a P45 or fill in a P46?

if you gave a P45 what were the pay to date figures?

after your tax code of 647L are there any words like M1 , WK1, Non-!!! ?

Without doing the maths that looks approximately right based on you having worked the whole year on that salary. However as you have only earned JSA to date I reckon you are going to miss out on some tax free allowance.

Speak to your payroll people and see if they can correct this (using the P45 from the dole office) if not you may need to do a tax return at the end of the year to fix this.
