I'd advise going into John Lewis and talking to their specialist sales staff. They aren't paid on commission and know far more about their subject than the likes of Comet/Curry staff! You can then go away with the info and search on the web eg via Kelkoo or somesuch (going via a cashback site of course) to find the best deal.

We recently bought a large fridge freezer from John Lewis. Decided on the one we liked but didn't like the price. They found us the exact same model, from the original manufacturer not the rebadged one on show, for £100 cheaper than the badged one, and ordered it in for me (and for cheaper than I could find it on the web)! They also have a price matching policy - although not for internet prices only shop prices.

If you buy via a website remember to go via a cashback site eg Quidco or various others. Though do note that some outlets may not be on cashback sites but may work out cheaper than those that are.

If you know anyone with an online subscription to Which ask them to run a best buy report for you. Alternatively you can get a free one month trial for £1.

Hope this helps. I would love to have the space and money for one of these!!!

  • Hi. Last year i purchased a large fridge freezer made by 'fisher and paykel'. They are a new zealand company. It has the water dispenser in the door but is built within the door so the shelves on the inside of the door are not comprimised and you can still fit a 6 pint carton of milk in it. It also came with a 10 year guarantee. it is fab quality and a great size. they are only stocked in certain shops so you would have to ask. hth!

Yes specsappeal, I too have heard good things about that make.

I started out with an Amana years ago. Beautifully made, the quality of the fittings and the way the doors shut, sheer class.

I believe the nearest to that now is Maytag, There is a good looking one with double fridge doors and a huge freezer drawer beneath.

The big black shiny Whirlpool I have now, I would certainly not recommend. it has "died" on me twice within 18months. The last time I lost £40's worth of smoked salmon along with much else. it also feels like a tin box against the Amana.

Also ask yourself if you will use the water and ice dispenser. They make more ice than you could use, the ice maker takes some interior space away.
  • hi, we have an LG American style fridge/freezer, we have had it over 3 years now & never (so far!) had any problems atall!

Thanks for all your advice, I can't really afford the fisher & paykel, my budget is about £900 and the only ones I've seen are the LG and Samsungs, and TBH I've not heard anything good about samsung (someone said on here engineers refuse to repair some faults with them because they just break again) the one that appeals most currently is the

  • I had a Samsung that broke down after less than a year. Samsung wanted upto 28 days to repair it without supplying me with a loan replacement! In the end it was replaced by the retailer, but only after I was forced to get a little heavy handed re Sale of Goods and got my solicitor involved! It was replaced with an LG which I've had for over 3 years and never had a minutes trouble with.

An engineer I've spoken to since has mentioned compressors have a habit of going on the Samsungs. Happened to me whilst I was on holiday.....came back to an almighty mess and one hell of a smell

I had a Maytag fridge freezer - kids loved the chilled water and ice dispenser The fridge was a great size - even big enough for Christmas! Watch the size of the freezer though - the ice dispenser does take up quite a bit of space.

There was a fault on quite a few Samsung models a couple of months ago and my sister-in-law rang the free help line number that was advertised in the 'Sun'. The engineer came out and replaced the faulty part foc and he said that the majority of owners of these freezers were not aware of the problem. It may be worth having a look on the website to see what the fault was and which models involved. Also anyone with a Samsung American style fridge/freezer might want to check up on it.
