can you poach apples?

I've found a recipe for a nice winter compote which I thought would be nice to serve on Christmas morning. The recipe states to poach some pears but Ive stacks of windfall apples carefully stored and feel it would be more Moneysaving to use those.

However, cant think if ever seen a recipe for poached apples and was wondering whether it would work?

Any help would be gratefully received!

    They would have to be eating apples, so that they held their shape. Cooking apples would just fall into mush. Why not have a trial run with a few and see how it goes?

    Can't see why you couldn't do eating apples (so not Bramleys which go to a mush) if you did them in one layer, halved - perhaps in a big frying pan - with liquid just at simmering point - that's what I do with pears.
