Mortgage exit fees

Has anyone had any success in reducing the exit fee with their lender? Last year when Abbey wrote and told me that the fee was to increase to £225 I wrote and objected most strongly. Their answer was just a load of waffle! I did make searches for others in the same boat but found none. Our mortgage ended in April (hooray) this year and when I saw how little work they had done I was astounded. Any advice at going back and having another go in the light of more recent news from the FSA?
