Having a nightmare getting a mortgage with Abbey

We're having a nightmare getting a mortgage with Abbey. To make matters worse we are going through a broker who is getting made redundant and the IFA office is closing down so we can't get hold of him.
But Abbey have been horrendous we were promised a 10 day fast track turn around, it's now week 7. the vendor has run out of patience as has the people that they are buying from.
Abbey ask questions every few days get immediate turn around replies and then take up to ten days to log the information and come back with another question.
Finally today we have an offer 4k less than we wanted to borrow which means as this is a different amount to what we asked for it has to be re-submitted.
I can't talk to customer services as they told me "that's what you get for going through a broker" and if we can't complete this week suspect we lose the house.
If by any chance we do get the house I am changing mortgages with someone a lot better than Abbey as I can. By all accounts Abbey are after 25% of the mortgage market and if this is the way that they are treating people they can stick it.
If the house falls through after complaining to the ombudsman, I'll be looking to get a new mortgage with someone else instead and start house hunting on Jan 2nd and I'll be even more angry as stamp duty will be back.

Why are you putting up with this? If the broker is being made redundant, is his manager as well? can't he/she do anything? They are the ones earning the commission from Abbey.
Why not go into your local abbey branch and ask them to take over the application? They will be able to get you an offer within a few days of the survey being done. I assume that your application is complicated and has to be underwritten by head office. The branch turn around on Head office underwritten applications is 48 hours.
If you read this forum you will know that brokers are banging their heads against brick walls - not always their fault, they go through a Business Development Unit that is extremely busy, but the Abbey branch staff put applications through a different channel and different underwriters and will normally have your offer through within a week !I am a Mortgage Adviser

I recently applied for mortgage direct at a branch at abbey and took 8 days in total from making the application, then survey to receiving a mortgage offer in the post. Was impressed with the quick turnaround. Listening to your experience I'm now glad I did not go through a broker.0
