Murder Mystery Game - Which one to buy

Hello,

I want to buy one of those boxed Murder Mystery games for my friend's Christmas. I want one new rather than second hand but don't want to spend more than about £15 including P&P (or I can go to a shop if anyone knows somewhere that sells them).

Does anyone have any experience of these games that can recommend a good one for someone who has never hosted such a party before? I want one that is not totally scripted i.e. you are given objectives and so on but not having to just read directly off a page.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

  • I have played 'Murder on Paradise Island'. We enjoyed it but as it was a first for everyone, we rushed through it a bit. Some people just read straight off the card and other, more confident people, tried to improvise more.

You can download most now and then print them off to save on money. Alot have reviews written about them as well.

  • We've played loads of these with family and friends and it's different every time! The A La Carte ones like The Brie, The Bullet and Black Cat require you to prepare a Meal to compliment the theme/era of the game (ideas are included in the contents of the box). This one was ideal to play with the inlaws, as are any turn of the century to the 40's ones are MIL can get her fancy costume jewellery out! And the guys dressed like gangsters complete with tommy guns and hats from an ebay costume store was awesome :D

We play the 60's / Music / Movie star themed ones with friends so they get a chance to wear hippy/psychedelic clobber and wigs - sooo much fun!

We also award a little prize for the Best Costume, Best Actor and the one who guesses correctly who the Murderer is. Nothing expensive, just adds a little something to the night.

We did an Oriental themed one and went a little OTT with authentic chopsticks, fancy wall hangers, Chinese lanterns etc but it made our Dining room look so authentic and was fab in the photos we took it was worth the expense! :p

I've had a look on Amazon for you and there are a few good ones under £10 with free super saver delivery?!

Good luck, don't take it too seriously and have fun! :j

Oh, and although there are certain scripted things people have to say to move the story along and provide information to the others to give clues etc you're mainly adlibbing during these things (notes on what to say and when to say it after the neccessary dialogue has ended are included within each charecters booklet) I hope this makes sense?! :o

Thanks for the replies. It is one like The Brie, The Bullet and Black Cat that I want for my friend where you can have a full on theme dinner. Having looked at quite a few of them that is actually the one I would have bought expect that my mum and dad went to a Murder Mystery dinner and played that one so I know who the murderer is (I hope my friend will invite me to the dinner!!)

It was actually this that inspired me to buy a game for my friend as she said it sounded like great fun.

I don't want to download one since it is for a present, I would like to get her a box set and maybe some bits and bobs to go with it (depending on the theme). If it is successful and we want to do it again we would probably start downloading them.

Which one would you most recommend in the same style as The Brie, The Bullet and Black Cat i.e. quite easy to dress up for and theme the decorations and food without spending an absolute fortune? The group would be probably 6-10 people male and female mostly age 30 give or take a couple of years and not easily offended :rotfl:

    Thanks again!

Just to add, both are available on the MurderMysteryStore website for £15.99 with free p&p...
  • Just looked on Amazon as well, Death By Chocolate is £9.78 with free super saver delivery.... HTH
  • Great recommendations thanks! I was thinking about Death by Chocolate but thought that looked like it was aimed more at a group of females than a mixture of both sexes. If that would be suitable for a mixed group I will go for it.

It should be quite easy to get chocolate related things to go with it too!

    Thanks a lot,

  • I have done several of the A la Carte range and prefer them to the other ranges available, the stories are easier to follow which is always helpful when you have had a drink or 3!! Brie the bullet and the black cat is one of my fav but have also done oriental one, indian one and others I can't remember! All good and definately a fun night, especially if you give people warning so they can dress up! One piece of advise if you can avoid using the extra roles if you can, eg if you have 8 guests it is best to get a box for 8-10 rather than 6-8 because if you are an extra guest you don't get so much to do and know your not the murderer!
    Hope you enjoy it
  • Theres lots of new ones on ebay too :)

I'm sure she'll have a great time...we've always had lots of fun using these boxed games.
