Baking :(

Options
So, I've had my new oven for a week and decided I was going to bake a quick cake.

Except I didn't realise until it went in the oven that I used plain flour and not self raising.

Result : very solid lump of banana and raisin. It's edible but most depressing.

Sorry, tis a bit chatty and I couldn't find a baking disasters thread. I don't think I'm looking hard enough though.

  • I used my breadmaker last week. Did everything EXACTLY like normal....and got a small hard lump instead of a loaf of bread :( only the dogs could eat it.

    I wouldn't have minded if I'd known what I'd done wrong !!

    Husband is now chief breadmaker!

Chop it up, chuck a jelly over it. Top it with cold custard ... say it was meant to be a trifle all along.

  • could you pass it off as a giant cookie?? yummy!!
  • I did that once with a carrot cake. It turned out like one solid lump and it didn't rise or do anything cakey whatsoever. I cut it up into little cubes and put them in the freezer. It worked quite nicely for a few chunks on top of ice cream :)

You can use plain flour for baking cakes if you've run out of self-raising, but you do need to add baking powder to it for the cake to rise. It might be that you have to chalk this one up to experience or give the local sparrows a really special treat.
