Summer Clothes for Toddler from Winter Clothes?

Options
Hi
I was sorting my son's wardrobe today as he has alot of winter clothes that are too short at the leg but fit around the waist. And tshirts that are too short in the arm and long on the body. (he's a funny shaped boy - short body long arms and legs)

I thought what a waste of clothes and I had a few ideas I could sell them at a carboot to make money for summer clothes or could I.....

Cut the trousers so they are shorts ie: 3/4 or little shorts (will turn up on sewing machine)

and

Cut the arms of the long tshirts and hem so they are little t shirts or vests.

Is it ok to do that or will I look a bit cheap?

Guys I need honest opinions

I'd definitely turn the trousers into shorts, not sure about the t-shirts though but there's no harm in trying one and seeing how it looks.

I have done this since my DS was a baby.

Used to cut the feet out of his babygrows when he got too long for them.

If you are unsure how they look, just use them for playing in the garden, or when you are at home.

My lad is now 8, and loves his 3/4 shorts I have made him from old jeans and trackie bottoms. I don't have a sewing machine, so we go for the distressed look, but he doesn't mind.

  • The tshirts have that layered sleeve look so I was thinking about just chopping the 'underlayer' if that makes sense.....

The distressed look might be easier! Frayed hems are in aren't they?

It just seems shame to waste the old clothes- kids clothes are so expensive and summer bundles on eBay are going for crazy prices think I left it a bit late, I didn't think we would get a summer!

My DS is currently running round in old trousers I've turned up to capri length - they look pretty cool - aka "skater style".

His are all simple jogging trousers if that helps. I can't advise on the t-shirts as it sounds like our kids are completely different builds.

TBH as toddlers get so messy, even if you only do this for clothes for the garden/park does it really matter? It's more important to me he has several clean changes of clothes available each day (he's potty training) than what other people think.

DS has a couple of outfits for "smart" in each size, (bought in the sales/ off ebay etc) and the rest of his wardrobe is just cheap joggers/t shirts.

the only thing I spend money on seems to be jumpers (I seem to find better bargains for coats for some reason)and shoes.

For what you would probably get for them on ebay, you may as well use them.

Frayed hems are fine. If they get too frayed, just trim em with scissors.

My lad is the opposite of yours - long body and stumpy little legs.

  • I was expecting my son to have stumpy legs I'm 5ft with an inside leg measurement of 25.5" and my hubby is only 5ft3 with a 26" inside leg.

Maybe my son will grow into his legs and arms???

Thanks for the advise when I was thinking about cutting his clothes I did think for a moment Nicci has your Money Saving gone too far?? :o

Glad I've found others like me

My hubby is 6ft with a 29" inside leg

My lad is head and shoulders over the rest of his class, have to buy him age 12-13 trousers and cut 6-8" off the bottom !!! He's only 8.

Luckily my daughter isn't afflicted - she is tall and slim with long legs. She also wears cut down trousers as shorts, or if not appropriate, as PJ's. She loves to wear my old t-shirts in bed :rotfl:

LOL, I have the opposite problem, I'm 5'3" with a 29" inside leg. getting tights to fit is almost impossible, I end up with the gusset round my knees.

I used to do this all the time with trousers and I'm just about to make some cut offs for DD especially for playing in the paddling pool.

I've just started going through my kids wardrobes and found some dressess(brand new) which really are a bit short and are going to have to get used up at nursery (so doesn't matter if they come home covered in paint).

Do you intend having any more children? If so I'd save your best stuff for the next one. If not I like mine to ahve a t-shirt on over their swimming cossies when in paddling pool, doesn't matter then how wrecked they get if you're about to get shut anyway.

I find pyjamas can be a bit hot to sleep in this time of year, could any of the clothes become sleepwear? A few months ago Iwas struggling to find DD nighties (she was potty training at time and I thought nighties would be easier) so she wore her brothers grown out of t-shirts as t-shirt dressess instead in bed.

Maybe I could use your son's cut off's to make a pair of trousers or a skirt for myself!

I buy petite clothes and still have to chop 6" off!
