I thought they had changed this so you now get charged unless its via invitation from them?

Thats what I thought - anyone managed to join without an invitation within the last few days?

Edit: Yay! Tried it anyway and it worked! I now have a Spotify account, excellent post!

Thanks for the second time for this post. I've wanted to join Spotify for a while but the last I'd heard they were only taking new (free) accounts by invitation - I think they had so many new accounts they were struggling to cope capacity-wise. I assume they have sorted out the problem as my new account is working fine and they have an excellent selection of music - they've had every artist I've looked for so far, including Dead Kennedys and X-Ray Spex, so I'm happy and the ads are only one or two short ones every few songs (not even as bad as radio ads and quite a few are music-orientated in any event).

I recently had a free trial of Sky Songs (one month free streaming with no ads plus 10 free download tracks) and I was almost tempted at £6.99 per month for unlimited streaming with no ads but I was wary about how often I would use it month in month out so this is an excellent alternative. However if you are considering paying for ad-free music streaming (and don't have an iPhone) then Sky Songs is probably the better choice as its £3 a month cheaper than the £9.99 Spotify charge for their Premium service and has just as good a selection of music.
