Link Financial Ltd on credit report but not ours

Hope this is the right spot for this, my apologies if not.
My husband and I moved back to England after being overseas for just over 4 years. We have been here now for 3. When we first moved in, we recieved 3-4 letters from various debt collection agencies. My husband recognized one of them and asked to send details and we took care of the debt immediately and another that later proved to be his. The other 2 however have never been verified. My husband asked to send details of the accounts as they didn't sound familiar. We have never received anything on them. One of the ladies was very rude and mentioned that payments were made until 4/2004. My husband went to hang up and then said what? He told her there was no way it was his as he was out of the country well before then. A similar situation occured with the other one. So basically, it has been just about 3 years since hearing from them. After all that, we got a copy of his credit report and the one we paid off was on there but not the ones that were claimed to be owed by us.
So about 4 months ago, he gets another letter from Link Financial Ltd (differnt Debt collecting com) stating that we owe this money and that last payment was made in 2004 and the loan/card defaulted 4/2004. It also stated that they found this information on his Experian report. So we got another report and also Equifax. It was only listed on Equifax and not Experian. This is the only negative listing on our report and we don't feel that it is ours as we know we never made any kind of international payments while overseas.
I'm now looking for advice on what to do next. The company never sent the requested information to prove it was ours. I'm assuming that the previous debt collector didn't have it and therefore sold it on.
Can we write to someone to get it removed from our credit report or will it fall off 4/2010? Would it be easier to just let it fall off or write to whoever? I really don't want to deal with these people as they are way OTT. Does anyone know where we stand?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
