When my son broke his frames last year (he was 11) I went into specsavers, where we had got his glasses originally and they replaced them free of charge, don't know if this is normal government policy that allows them to do this? But both of my elder daughters have also had their glasses replace foc, one lost her's, and the other had a lens cracked when someone sat on them! Worth giving the optician a call though to check if replacement is free.

You are allowed to have your glasses replaced or repaired 5 times in a year the optician claim the money back off the NHS, obviously this is only for children. I have a 4 year old and we have had to have the repaired 4 times already. Spec savers have alwayys been very good, although they don't have a very large range for 4 year old girls.

We use an independant optician and repairs so far have been FOC (mainly broken arms and lost screws!).

I'd recommend you phone around. Originally I didn't and was disappointed with the cost and range available, then when he needed a new pair as his head had grown I decided to have a nose around. The one we use now has lots of designs/colours to choose from under the Government scheme and the best bit, they are really good with him.

My two used Specsavers until last year when they both ceased to need glasses any more. They are great. Lots of choice of glasses that are covered by the government for free. They mend them for free as well. I have two boys who were always breaking their glasses. I went at least once a month to have them straightened or mended. I once received a letter of the government reminding me to tell my children to be more careful. He was 4 at the time!! They still fixed them though. I think there must be limit to how many times you could have them fixed officially but Specsavers never charged and did not always ask me to sign a form. I only signed if they needed new ones if they were so badly damaged. It got easier as they got older.
