Council Tax - previous years rates

Options
Hi

Do any of you clever people know where I can find Council Tax rates for previous years? I have received a letter from Valuation Office confirming my band is being reduced from B to A and my council have confirmed that once they have recevied a copy of that document I will get a refund (yes!!!) I'm just being nosey and wondering how much (its being backdated to 1999) The current difference between the bands is £180.

Anyone have any ideas where to look as theres nothing helpful on the council website.

Thanks in advance.

You would need to contact your local authority for the rates for previous years unless your lucky enough to find them in a google search.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

It is all calculated on a set scale between the bands, so if you know how much you paid in each year then you can calculate it yourself from that.

So if you have been paying a band B and it's going down to a band A you will get 1/7th back from what you paid in a lot of areas.

It is all calculated as a ratio of Band D. It's changed a bit since 1999 too though - and different regions operate slightly differently, but if you are in an area where Band A pays 6/9ths of a Band D and Band B pays 7/9ths of a Band D, you'd get back 1/9th of a Band D ... or 1/7th of what you actually paid.

Now, that might not seem straight forward, but that's because we'd need to know where you actually have been paying your council tax to refine it further.

Each region operates the same - apart from Wales which has an extra band, tha bands are 6/9th, 7/9th, 8/9th. 9/9th, 11/9th, 13/9th, 15/9th , 18/9th of a Band A equivalent.
