Ketogenic diet?

Hi All. I am making this enquiry on behalf of a friend.I searched under Ketogenic but found nothing. Pen/Pink , if there are any other suitable threads please point me in that direction.

**Please note, I am not seeking medical advice **

My friend needs to gather as much information as she can - so we are looking for recipes or meal suggestions.

Ketogenic diet is...
The ketogenic diet is a high fat, adequate protein, very low carbohydrate diet which is carefully and individually calculated for each child. Calories are restricted and depend on the age and activity of the child. If properly calculated, the child should neither gain nor lose significant weight, but should grow normally for his/her stature and the weight should remain close to the ideal weight for height. If the child is overweight, calories are limited until the ideal body weight is approached. Fluids are also restricted, although for reasons which are less clear. A typical breakfast might include a mushroom omelet with several slices of bacon and hot chocolate made with 36 per cent cream. Lunch might include celery stalks filled with peanut butter or cream cheese, lettuce with mayonnaise and a slice of tomato, and a caffeine-free diet soda. Dinner might include a weighed portion of hot dog with ketchup or mustard, lettuce and mayonnaise, a whipped cream sundae with a strawberry and a diet soda.

Anyway, just wondered if anyone had experience of catering for this type of diet, or had any child friendly recipes or meal suggestions (or could point me to similar threads which may help?)

As always, thanks in advance. :j

It sounds like a very complicated diet - hasn't it been used to treat people with severe epilepsy or something . It would probably be better if your friend can get a referral to a dietician so it can be properly monitored.

Yeah it is used in treatment of Epilepsy. She is being referred, I just wondered if anyone had any basic meal suggestions for high fat low carb. Obviously each person is different and calculations are made according to weight and height etc but I was looking for basic meal suggestions :D

There's this book which might be useful http://www.amazon.com/Ketogenic-Diet-Treatment-Children-Epilepsy/dp/1932603182 (I assume from your original post that it is for a child?)

There's also the Atkins Diet, so I'm sure there will be plenty of meal ideas there.

    Hi zippy,

There are some sample meal plans on this website that may help. It also has a forum where parents can get support.

Most Atkins type/low carb diet books have receipes in that would fit a ketogenic diet :)

  • Did you spot this link at the bottom of the link you gave. There are more links on MAtthew's site. http://site.matthewsfriends.org/index.php?page=information-on-the-diet
  • wow.. really hard for a child and not very balanced seeing as it has to be supplemented with vitamins and calcium...
sounds like atkins which is a HORRIBLE diet. I felt permanently cold and feint and i had horrible constipation as there is no fibre. Also the restriction of liquids is worrying as on keto diets you are encouraged to drink more that usual to flush the ketones out of your body as they are harmful (i thought).. i would even attempt this without strict medical supervision..
