Laptop that won't switch on

Anyone had to deal with a laptop that won't switch on?
It is not mine, some I know was using their Dell Inspiron and it just switched off and won't turn on. No lights are showing when the power cable is in. Even without the cable it won't switch on and the battery has charge in it.
Any ideas what problem is?

sounds like the same fault as mine,i have tried 2 places for different opinions to repair, neither could fic it,suggested put it on ebay to sell the screen etc for parts.
The motherboard price quoted by Dell is around £300!!!!!0 -
Does the battery have a power meter on it? If you take the battery out, some have a button on the udnerside which shows you the charge in the battery.
When you plug the adapter in, are any lights showing on the front of the laptop? Supposedly, when you plug the adapter in, unless there is a MoBo or adapter fault, a light should show on the front of the laptop (this is what Dell technical support told me, but I'm taking with a pinch of salt because I've seen a couple which work fine, but this doesn't happen).
The other thing to do is to take out every "extra" from the laptop - extra RAM (unscrew from underneath the laptop), take it out of the docking station, take out wireless card (may have to undo it from underneath the laptop), CD-rom (if you can) etc. Take out the battery and press the power button a couple of times to discharge any static. Plug the mains adapter in and then try booting. If it does boot, put the extras back one at a time until you find the one which was causing the problems (it could just be a loose connection).0
