thing is easyken, say you were unscrupulous, and had bought up every cheap flight on the plane, and booked it under the name John Doe.

That cant happen as any duplicate names on the same flight will be cancelled automatically, airlines have some very clever automated booking checking systems.
Name corrections can be made by an agent of up to 3 letters before ticketing any more than that then it has to go through BA, if tickets have been issued and the name needs correcting, say with a maiden name to married name then you have to prove its the same person and the ticket will be reissued at a cost of £30.00.
And if Polishbigspender can show me a fare on BA that does allow name changes in any class I will eat my wifes handbag.
  • Im pretty sure BA will do time/date changes for a fee +/or diff in fare (dependant on fare type ie flexible or lowest cost) but NOT name changes.
When we tried to do a name change we simply had to rebook a new flight

Expedia are scoundrels in my opinion. I tried a date change once. They said I had to do it via email & it took them three days during which the price went by by £100 each in addition to the £50 per ticket change!

I agree largely with the above...

If we book common names such as John Smith, we often have a remark put in the booking by airlines to validate the name with them.

BA will change 2 or 3 letters of a name free of charge but this has to be done directly with the airline by the agent. Unless you have fully flexible tickets (which I don't believe you have) you can change both flights to another date for a fee of £60 per transaction plus any fare difference. Just as an example, if the agent can find alternative seats in the same booking class (e.g. change M class for M class, etc...) on a later flight or different dates, you would only be charged the £60 change fee by the airline plus any agent fee. This would be your cheapest course of action for changing the flights but then you have to see how this would change your hotel costs.
