Hi Eveyone, I am new to this site so I hope I have posted this on the right place
I would like to put on open fire into my living room but haven't a clue where to start or how much it would cost.
I live in an ex housing executive house, my heating is all oil fired central heating, but as it used to be an housing executive house it did used to have a glass fronted fire in it, but there is now an electric fire in its place, so I was thinking it should be simple enough to convert it back to a fire ( but then again as I don't have a clue it probably involves ripping the whole living room apart!! )
Has anyone done this in their house?? Or could anyone give me an idea of how complicated it would be and how expensive or hopefully not too expensive
it would be to do this???
Thank you

You need to get a HEAT engineer out......it also depends on the size of flue/liners you have!! I remember when I was in my executive house having a parkray glass fronted fire, and these were the engineers the H/E used!! Sometimes a plumber (who has fitted OFCH) would be able to tell you!!:jIm going to be frugal:j:DIm going to be frugal:D;)Im going to be frugal;)Beetlejuice Beetlejuice...................:rotfl:0

Don't bother. Firstly open fires are very very inefficient (unless you have a back boiler of one of those little Ranges with a back boiler built into it installed) with about 80% or so of your heat going up the chimney and in doing so also sucks draughts thorugh the rest of your house...
Secondly, If your in a bulit up area, chances are you have to use smokeless fuel (though not many people do but really you should) Coal is actually quite expensive for all the time it lasts.... you could easily go through a bag a day and at over £5/bag thats quite a bit..
I'd spend the money sorting out any Draughts, increasing Insulation and maybe updating your oil burner to a more efficient model if possible...
Open fires not all they're cracked up to be... more for decoration...0 -
Would you ask the wolves to look after the sheep?
