help-no starch for christening gown

Just wondering if anyone can help me. I was going to starch the family Christening gown but can only buy spray starch locally. Am not going to be in nearest big town (35 miles away) to get 'proper' starch before the Christening. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could use instead? The gown is in good condition but has a little yellowing on the front which I'm hoping I can handwash out.

Cut a couple of potatos in half, leave them for twenty mins or so, the thin film of milky white liquid which forms on the surface can be scraped off carefully, two potatos {four halves} should supply enough to add to cold clean water and mix in dip gown in and iron dry, not too hot or you will discolour the gown.

Unfortunate drawback to this method with a christening gown though is you end up with a sticky kid.

I'm not sure! I just thought I would need to use a lot of the spray stuff. My Gran starched the gown for us and it's something I've never done before....

The Christening is on Sunday! Was planning to wash and iron gown tomorrow as will need time to dry (and as I'm moneysaving the heating is on very low!). Think I'll give the potato idea a go. I'm sure the sugar suggestion is good but DD might not get any peace from the dog!!

Now that really does bring an interesting picture to mind - the dog treating DD as a giant lollipop.:rotfl:

You get a good starchy gloop if you cook a bit of rice til most of the water has gone, then strain through a collander which then sits straight back ontop of the saucepan [which just had the rice in] to catch the liquid. When its gone cold it should be thick and jelly like, [a bit like chicken stock] just dont rinse the rice before cooking.

    I hope that made sense.
