Hi Pennywise, I have also been wondering as I simply couldn't believe that I could have overpaid by that much. This is why I have delayed doing any more. I simply haven't had the time to go over everything.
I deliberately paid myself PAYE instead of Director dividends because I got so much hassle from HMRC ten years ago when I ran my previous business, was a lot more naive than now and used an accountant who recommended this. So I set myself up on PAYE as I figured it was more trouble than it was worth to do any different.
They claim the overpayments were made over the two years the company traded (even more unbelievable as I submitted year one PAYE return on time also yet they haven't "discovered" this overpayment until now!) However, I did have issues with the software at one point when, after a budget, they reissued the CD and it wiped my previously entered data. So, it is possible that this could have caused me to pay the PAYE twice in one month - but it only happened once and I am good at matching transactions on the bank statements so cannot believe that I could have missed this.
I have got to go back over all my accounts to see if I can spot any errors, but I suspect, once I have spent the time scrutinizing the books that the PAYE is correct.
I am hoping to get the time this week to do this.
