    If anyone is sick long term and the employer feels that they can no longer fulfil their duties,then they can move to dismiss that person.

    If your condition falls within those prescribed in the disability discrimination Act then your employer has some obligations.
    Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    If your company gets itself in a position where one employee's last minute sickness means you can not return your accounts that fine is yours for the taking! Pressuring sick members of staff to make up hours is not exactly the best crisis management, or best staff management either!


    bluntly, I'd manage it by losing the unreliable member of staff if they couldn't help the team out.

    theoretical example of course. I try and have decent adult conversation so we don't get in a mess in the first place.

    hmm. some of this thread seems to have gone to
    - poor oppressed workers
    vs
    - evil "victorian mill owner style" bosses

    it isn't like that where I work! or anywhere I have worked.

    Can't people talk it over and reach reasonable agreements?

    Reasonable being subjective, of course!

    Conversations cannot stop people getting sick!

    It is inevitable that staff time will get lost through sickness and business should run along the lines of ensuring this causes minimum disruptions. If your prefered method of dealing with this is to sack someone because you have no other way of getting your accounts done in time that is up to you. :confused:

    It is hardly claiming victorian mill working conditions to suggest that as sickness is inevitable it is more helpful if management have back up resources or better time management than to expect somehow a sick employee to save the situation.

    I think if you are getting pay Company sick pay, rather than just SSP its not unreasonable to be expected to make an attempt to catch up on the work you've missed especially if its single days at a time.

    Unfortunately lots of single days absence look suspicious even if there is a reason like migraine s- having sickness notes and medical records doesn't legally stop a company applying its sickness policy.. A company can decide what level of sickness is unacceptable and move to discipline those that can't and won't comply.

    I appreciate its difficult when asking about something related to you but you need to learn not to take things personally when they're not intended that way. The people here are not invested in taking special steps to hurt or protect your feelings, just to talk about the truth of a situation as they see it.

    Same at work - I hope you haven't been telling the people there "but its so unfair that someone has all that time off with stress" because that isn't helpful - they're almost certainly not trying to attack you personally, they just need adequate reliable cover to do a job that needs doing. I've been dinged for poor attendance in a year when I went into hospital for surgery and complications meant I ended up taking about 2 months off work when only about 10 days was expected. I was somewhat taken aback that it was mentioned at first (given the nature of my illness) but didn't take it personally because I knew that my employer needs someone in my chair doing my job and that is what they were worried about.

    You need to understand what problem it is that your employer is trying to solve and then demonstrate to them h ow you will help solve that problem. I appreciate that might not be easy in your situation, but that's what will help.
