I find that programme very unhelpful. It is a good idea... I just don't think the examples so far raised mean much 'in the real world.'
For example, last night's episode. The restaurant bit- despite what the legal standing is, those girls really had no choice to pay up. The manager was threatening them with the police, and it was all very intimidating and embarrassing for them (I think all the girls behaved very well! I'm not so sure many people would have been as reasonable and polite as they were). If the police were called, things could get so much worse (worst case scenario is a criminal record, which could ruin some careers- not something I would have risked as a student).
It isn't a helpful consumer programme such as Watchdog; it is a voyeristic, humiliation type show, along the lines of Beagle's About.
I didn't see the episode so no idea what they recommended but this has actually happened to me restaurant in Leeds, the service was terrible, plus the waitress was chewing gum, urgggh !
Refused to pay the tip, manager came out, threatened with the police, Stood my ground and offered my address and told him to sue me.
In the end he didn't take the address just asked us to leave and told us never to go there again, something I was happy to comply with."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

I watched it last week, and thought that the advice was incorrect. It could be a good program but they need to do more research first.Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

You were right to stand your ground. The point I was making about the prog was that it was a group of young girls involved. They seemed pretty clear about their legal rights not to pay the tip, but caved in under pressure. I think most people would- esp. when threatened with police action (and to the previous poster- I know the police wouldn't do anything. But would everyone? And who would dare take the risk, when the consequences over just a few quid, could be quite severe?).
So, despite knowing about consumer rights, the programme does not address how to deal with bullies.
Oh and as for the comment on cowboy garages. Here's the thing: they don't usually advertise the fact they are cowboys, so I don't think customer "stupidity" is an issue.0 -

Agreed. Difference is, I guess, is that the barrack room lawyers on here aren't paid to give their 'advice' and - more often than not - are shouted down if they are wrong.
Kind of lawyering by democracy if you like!0 -

I thought it was called "Get Screwed". Then I realised I wasn't looking at BBC3Squirrel!If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

The advice on this forum is provided anonymously by members of the public. Whilst most of it is given in good faith, it comes with absolutely no guarantees of accuracy.
Conversely, it's not unreasonable for people to expect that a TV show produced by a national broadcaster with a public service remit is as accurate as possible."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0 -
Wrt taxis in London, if it's a black cab and they stop they HAVE to take you as long as it's less than 12 miles. Any bollox they give you about 'my lights not on mate so i don't need to take you' or 'I'm off duty/on way home' is as described ie bollox.
If they don't take you, threaten to report them to the PCO [Public Carriage Office] - can be done online. IIRC their licence number is on a plate beside the rear numberplate, but you can complain even if you just have their actual number plate details [ie the car reg].
