car question

Hi, currently filling in forms. Car is still a big concern for me. I am currently unemployed but actively looking for work. My car is worth £1300 in poor condition on Parkers guide but I don't believe it would sell for this amount. Although the engine is reliable the bodywork and interior are not because I used it as a trade vehicle when working as a ceiling fixer so it got bashed about a bit on building sites and carrying tools and supplies. However I really want to keep it as I would find it extremely difficult to find work or indeed carry on working in the future as a ceiling fixer without transport. Once BR I would not have the funds for purchasing another. I understand the OR is unlikely to let me keep the car but I believe they will offer me the chance to have a third party purchase it. In this case my parents have agreed to buy it back if necessary. I am also struggling with my SOA as my only income is JSA, CTB & HB, I can keep my expenditure within my income if I have no car costs ie, tax, insurance, petrol, repairs etc. Again my parents have agreed to fund this until I find a job. My questions are, how much would my parents have to offer to buy the car? and would the OR allow my parents to fund the running costs, if so should I explain this in the special notes on the form? Thanks

Hi, go on the basis that you are actively seeking work and will need the car for that...OR's vary on this but if you can show that you've been attending interviews and employment is a real prospect soon that would be good.
It's difficult to say how much they would accept if they won't exempt it, maybe a few hundred but others may have a better idea. I don't think it would be a problem if your parents fund the cost of running the car.0 -
I thought that the OR had to give you an amount towards the cost of a replacement vehicle if they took your car.
My car is the only asset I have and is worth only 1600 on Parkers price guide. I too am unemployed and have been for 10 months but have had a baby during this time too, I am now starting to look for work and will need my car as I am looking further afield than just locally.
Can anyone add a bit more meat to the bones regarding the car issue?0 -

Cars and bankruptcy. We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0 -
I notice you're in Basingstoke so you will probably have the same OR as I had - Reading. And that's good news really!
The Reading OR told me that as long as the car's value wasn't more than about £4k it's not usually worth them taking it and making me downgrade as the costs for them are too much. So I got to keep my car which was worth about £3k as I needed it for work.
So don't worry about them forcing a sale - it's not to say that they won't, but you have one of the better offices for dealing with cars!0 -

Yes you are correct I believe my petition will be presented at Reading Court. The information about the car is useful. Is the OR that serves this court reasonable to deal with, I'm more worried about the OR interview than going BR?0 -
~Every OR seems to act different where cars are concerned, im afraid you wont know until after the event. If it was worth £1500 and not exempt I would start by offering £300 then work your way up...0

My OR was great, but I know there are several at the Reading office. Hopefully you'll get the same one I had!
Things to watch out for - I wasn't allowed both a barclays and coop account, I had to close the coop. A BRO/BRU was mentioned at my interview but then nothing came of it. I did lose an item of jewellry worth less than £1k (listed as £500) so the "sub-£1k is safe rule" does not necessarily apply for all items.
Having said that I did get discharged in under 6 months - even with a property to deal with - so I am not complaining at all!!0 -

...also, the car has to be capable of exemption but just not exempted because of it's value to get some money back to buy another.
Different OR offices will take different views on your situation I'm afraid, some may only say the vehicle would be exempt if you are about to start definite employment rather than just simply looking for work.0 -

Sorry to appear thick, but what does the above actually mean?:pB&SC No. 298

Just means the car would need to be exempted as an asset for a reason they wouldnt just take a car of high value then give you cash back for a cheaper run around IF you didnt have a good enough case to keep the higher value car or indeed the chea\per replacement in the first place
(Innerpeace....simplify dude!)We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will0
